How VOLI's numbers work

Where the stats come from

VOLI's match data comes from publicly available sources: the official box scores and schedules published for NCAA Division I women's, MLV and LOVB matches, and the play-by-play published for MLV and LOVB matches. VOLI processes it with its own pipeline, which matches each player and team across seasons, checks the numbers against each other, and builds everything else in the app from them: box scores, per-set rates, leaderboards, lead charts, pro play-by-play and rotations, match MVPs, fantasy scoring, team ratings and the VOLI Top 100.

The history in the Volleyball Encyclopedia (honors, AVCA Coaches Polls, NCAA and conference champions, record books and the MLV Draft) is compiled from the published records of the AVCA, the NCAA, the conferences and the leagues, and each volume credits its source.

How often it updates

• During a match: the score and box score update in the app as the match is played, with play-by-play for MLV and LOVB matches. In college matches, each team's chance to win updates after every set.
• After a match: the final box score is checked and stored, and leaderboards update with it.
• Team ratings: recomputed nightly from all completed matches.
• The VOLI Top 100: set each Monday from the latest ratings, and it doesn't change afterwards. It has been published each Monday since September 2026.
• History: honors, AVCA polls and records are added through the season.

How the VOLI Top 100 is computed

The VOLI Top 100 is computed from match results and strength of schedule. Each team's rating, AMR (Adjusted Margin Rating), is the number of points per set it would beat an average Division I team by. A rating of +4.2 means the team beats an average Division I team by about 4 points a set.

The rating starts from each set's point margin and adjusts it for the opponent: a close set against a strong team can say more than a lopsided one against a weak team. Early in the season, when teams have played only a few matches, a preseason starting point carries some of the weight. It comes from the team's rating last season and how many of its players return, and it fades as real results come in.

Ratings are computed for every Division I team, so the list stops at 100 only for display. The current list: VOLI Top 100.

How each match's chance to win is computed

Before first serve, each upcoming college match in the app shows each team's chance to win and the most likely set score. Both come from the gap between the two teams' ratings: the bigger the gap, the more likely the higher-rated team wins. From that, VOLI works out the chance of each of the six possible final scores (3–0, 3–1, 3–2 and their reverses) and shows the most likely one.

During the match, the chance to win updates after every set. VOLI keeps only the final scores still possible from the sets each team has won so far, and re-weighs their pre-match chances. A team up 2–1 in sets shows its chance to finish the match from there.

EVOLLVE's analytics in VOLI

VOLI also shows analytics by EVOLLVE: nightly team ratings for every Division I team, player impact numbers such as RAPM, per-game Impact, Attack, Serve and Defense measures, and EVOLLVE's own match predictions. They are computed by EVOLLVE and labeled as theirs in the app, next to VOLI's ratings and the AVCA Coaches Poll.

What VOLI doesn't claim

• No player ratings of VOLI's own: VOLI rates teams. Player impact numbers come from EVOLLVE.
• No official awards: VOLI's match MVPs and the VOLI Top 100 are VOLI's own. Honors in the Volleyball Encyclopedia are the ones the awarding bodies gave.
